Vijayawada is one of the biggest cities of Andhra Pradesh, known widely for its religious, historical and archaeological importance. The major attraction of Vijayawada is the famous Kanaka Durga temple, which attracts a huge number of visitors every day. Situated in the heart of the Vijayawada city, Kanaka Durga temple is located on the Indrakeeladri hill, on the banks of the River Krishna. The temple can be reached by steps or by road.

There are various legends related to the Kanaka Durga temple. According to a legend, Kanaka Durga temple was constructed by the great warrior of Mahabharata, Arjuna after he obtained the Pasupata astra from Lord Shiva at this very site. According to another legend, Goddess Kanaka Durga made Indrakila as her permanent abode after killing the demon king Mahishasura. The deity of Kanaka Durga is regarded as Swayambhu or self-manifested and is considered very powerful.

The 4-foot-high idol of Kanaka Durga with eight arms, each holding a weapon, standing over the demon king Mahishasura and piercing him with her trident is an epitome of beauty and courage. The idol is beautifully decorated with glittering ornaments and flowers. The Kanaka Durga temple is also known to contain the inscriptions of different dynasties. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with much aplomb here and the idol is beautifully decorated during the 10 days of celebrations. Huge number of devotees visit the Kanaka Durga temple to seek Maa Durga’s blessings during the Dussehra celebrations after taking a holy dip in the Krishna river.
